Despite the lovely shade from mature trees in the park, continued hot dry weather has turned the dense clay soil into concrete. The weeding possible earlier in the summer becomes too much of a battle.
However, the 4 acres of Heaton Moor Park still provides plenty to do for the Friends of Heaton Moor Park. Every third Thursday of the month, the Friends tackle a variety of tasks around the park, helping to amplify its welcoming beauty.
At the monthly ‘Garden in the Park’ on Saturday 18th July, over a dozen volunteers improved the park’s looks by dead-heading roses to encourage a second round of blooms and cutting back brambles, nettles, ash, ivy and sycamore. Those that may be poking your back as you try to sit on a bench received special whacks. Recently planted shrubs and flowers also received a welcome drink of water to help them survive the recent heat onslaught.
